Every song starts with a simple question: what does the science actually say? Here’s the honest answer, written for the parents, educators, and speech-language professionals who want more than a marketing claim.

A Baby’s Brain Is Built to Listen

Long before babies understand words, they are listening to the building blocks of language.

They hear vowels, consonants, rhythm, pitch, pauses, and patterns. Their brains begin sorting these sounds before they can speak. During the first years of life, the brain is especially open to learning from what a child hears, sees, and experiences.

This ability of the brain to grow and change through experience is called neuroplasticity.

The Sounds We Share was created around a simple idea:

Every child deserves to grow up hearing the beautiful sounds that connect us before they learn the words that sometimes divide us.

Our songs introduce children to playful speech sounds from across the human sound palette. These sounds are placed inside joyful music, movement, repetition, and imaginative adventures.

We are not trying to teach babies a foreign language through a song.

We are creating playful opportunities for children to hear, notice, enjoy, and explore a wider variety of human speech sounds during an important time in brain development.

Babies Begin as Citizens of the World

Research shows that babies start life able to hear speech differences from languages around the world. During the first year, their brains begin specializing in the sounds they hear most often, a process called perceptual narrowing.

The Sounds We Share gives families a joyful way to explore a wider world of sound during this remarkable stage of development.

This does not mean that a baby’s brain becomes less capable. It means the brain is becoming more efficient. It is learning which sound differences are most important in the child’s daily environment.

Classic research by Janet Werker and Richard Tees found that babies between 6 and 8 months old could distinguish certain speech sounds from languages they had never heard. By about 10 to 12 months, many infants became more focused on the sound patterns of their home language.

In simple terms, babies begin life ready to listen broadly. Experience then helps shape what their brains become best at hearing.

A baby’s brain does not simply record sound. It searches for patterns.

Which sounds appear often? Which sounds occur together? Which differences seem important? Which sounds are followed by a smile, a movement, a response, or a meaningful event?

Research has shown that infants can track how often different speech sounds occur. This helps them begin forming mental sound categories.

In one important study, babies heard speech sounds presented in different patterns. The way those sounds were distributed affected how well the babies could tell them apart later.

This shows that even before babies understand words, their brains are already learning from repeated sound patterns.

Exposure Can Support Continued Sensitivity to New Sounds

One of the best-known studies in infant language research involved English-learning babies who were exposed to Mandarin Chinese.

The babies took part in a series of short sessions with a native Mandarin speaker. The adult read books, played with toys, and interacted naturally with them.

After the sessions, the babies were better able to recognize a Mandarin sound difference than babies who had not received the exposure.

The study showed that experience can help infants remain sensitive to unfamiliar speech sounds during the first year of life.

However, the study also uncovered something very important.

Babies who watched the same material on a screen or heard it through audio recordings did not show the same level of learning. The strongest results came from live, responsive human interaction.

That finding shapes how we think about The Sounds We Share.

Our songs are best used as an invitation for connection, not as electronic background noise. Parents and caregivers can make the experience more meaningful by singing, smiling, copying sounds, dancing, pausing, and responding to the child.

Hearing More Than One Language Does Not Confuse Babies

Babies are capable of learning from more than one language.

Children raised in bilingual and multilingual homes may follow a somewhat different path as they learn the sound patterns of each language. That does not mean they are confused.

Their brains are doing something impressive. They are learning how two or more language systems are organized.

Research suggests that bilingual experience can affect how infants process speech sounds and may help maintain attention to a wider set of language patterns for a longer period.

However, simply hearing a few sounds from another language does not make a child bilingual. True bilingual development requires meaningful, repeated exposure to language used by real people in everyday life.

The Sounds We Share does not claim to teach multiple languages. It offers joyful exposure to a wider range of speech sounds that children may not hear every day.

Music Gives the Brain More Than Sound

Music and language share several important features.

Both use:

Music can help hold a child’s attention and make repeated listening enjoyable. Rhythm can also help children notice timing and changes within a stream of sound.

In a University of Washington study, 9-month-old babies took part in playful music sessions built around a waltz rhythm. The researchers later measured the babies’ brain responses to patterns in both music and speech.

The babies who took part in the music sessions showed stronger brain responses to changes in timing patterns.

This does not prove that any song will improve language development. It does suggest that active, rhythmic musical play can engage brain systems that are also useful for processing speech.

Repetition Helps Babies Find Patterns

Adults sometimes become tired of hearing the same song again and again.

Babies usually do not.

Repetition gives a young brain another chance to notice what happened. A child may first notice the beat, then a movement, then a vowel, then a pause, and later a repeated sound.

Familiarity can make it easier for a child to predict what comes next. That prediction is part of learning.

This is why The Sounds We Share uses memorable hooks, repeating sound patterns, simple movements, and small musical changes. The goal is repetition without making every moment exactly the same.

A child may hear “ma,” “na,” “la,” a rolling “r,” a rounded vowel, or a soft “sh” many times inside a song. Each repetition gives the listening brain another sample of the sound.

Movement Can Deepen the Experience

Babies and toddlers learn with their whole bodies.

They reach, bounce, clap, rock, point, turn, imitate, and dance. These actions help connect what they hear with what they see and feel.

Movement also turns passive listening into shared play.

When a parent rocks during a soft nasal sound, claps during a sharp consonant, or sways during a flowing vowel, the child receives several kinds of information at once.

  • The child hears the sound.
  • The child sees the movement.
  • The child feels the rhythm.
  • The child notices the adult’s face and response.

This kind of multisensory experience can help hold attention and make an activity more memorable.

Babies Learn Best Through Relationships

The most powerful learning tool in a baby’s world is not a screen, speaker, app, or toy.

Babies learn through what researchers call serve-and-return interaction. A baby makes a sound, movement, facial expression, or gesture. An adult notices and responds. The baby responds again.

Research has found that the amount of speech directed to a child, especially during responsive back-and-forth interaction, is related to later language skills.

Talking near a baby is not always the same as talking with a baby.

  • Replace a speech-language pathologist or other professional
  • Prove that brief exposure will create permanent abilities

Early development is shaped by many things, including genetics, health, relationships, sleep, nutrition, hearing, family life, culture, and the amount and quality of interaction a child receives.

Our role is smaller, but still meaningful.

We create joyful sound experiences that families can use to listen, move, imitate, connect, and play together.

How to Use The Sounds We Share

Watch Together When Possible

Sit close enough to respond to your child. Smile, point, sing, and move with the music.

Copy the Sounds

You do not need to pronounce every sound perfectly. Be playful. Let your child see your lips and face.

Follow Your Child’s Lead

Your child may bounce during one song, stare quietly during another, or make a completely different sound. Respond to what the child actually does.

Pause for a Response

Leave space for a look, movement, laugh, babble, or gesture. Communication begins before words.

Repeat Favorites

A favorite song is not wasted time. Familiarity gives children more chances to notice patterns.

Carry the Sounds Into Daily Life

Repeat a favorite sound during bath time, a car ride, a walk, or playtime. The best learning often happens after the video ends.

Keep the Experience Playful

There is no quiz and no correct score. Curiosity matters more than perfect imitation.

A Wider World of Sound

Every language uses only part of the full range of sounds the human voice can make.

Some languages use rolled or tapped “r” sounds. Some use tones that change a word’s meaning. Some use clicks. Some use nasal vowels, rounded vowels, deep throat sounds, or consonants made with airflow that may feel unfamiliar to English-speaking families.

These sounds are not strange.

They are human.

By bringing pieces of this shared sound palette into music, we hope to help children experience difference with curiosity and joy.

Before children learn that people speak different languages, they can discover something even more basic:

A child may listen without copying. Another may move without making sounds. Another may repeat one favorite sound for weeks. These are different ways of exploring.
